What is the maximum number of pieces that can be obtained with 5 straight vertical cuts?

Here are the conditions that you need to follow;

  1. The pieces need not be equal in size.
  2. All the cuts should be perpendicular to the cutting board.
  3. You cannot slice the circle (i.e. cut it parallel to the cutting board)
  4. You cannot move or stack the pieces on one another.
