- If Mark gave 2 apples to Sam, they will have equal number of apples.
- If Sam gave 2 apples to Mark, he will have twice as many as Sam.

Let us assume;
M = Number of apples with Mark &
S = Number of apples with Sam.
We can write the following 2 equations from the given information;
M – 2 = S + 2 ——— (1)
M + 2 = 2 x (S – 2) —-(2)
Solving (1) we get;
M – S = 4 ———(3)
Solving (2) we get;
M + 2 = 2S – 4
2S – M = 6 ———–(4)
Adding (3) and (4) we get;
M – S + 2S – M = 4 + 6;
S = 10.
Substituting value of S in (3) we get;
M – 10 = 4
Therefore;
M = 4 + 10 = 14.
